En 1985 à Miramas, Laurent Malone invitait les habitants à répondre à une caméra à la question : "Que voulez-vous faire dans la vie?" En 1999, l'Institut de Développement Artistique lui proposa de prolonger ce projet au sein de la faculté de Lettres d'Aix-en-Provence. L'IDA qui s'est donné pour mission la médiation, tente ainsi de mettre en exergue les affinités qui existent entre une œuvre d'art et un public déterminé. À l'Université un flot considérable d'individus s'empressent dans les couloirs, il s'agissait donc de prévenir l'échange, de favoriser ce face à face. Chaque jour pendant une semaine en mars 1999, Laurent Malone a interrogé plus de 200 étudiants leur posant la même question. Quelques mois après il était accueilli le temps d'une résidence à vidéochroniques afin de finaliser son projet. Quatre films de 6 minutes montés en séquences très courtes ont été réalisés à partir des 120 réponses sélectionnées. Laurent Malone a choisi de présenter son travail sous la forme d'un dispositif de 4 moniteurs placés côte à côte. Le visiteur pouvait s’asseoir sur un banc, écouter les réponses des étudiants tout en laissant son regard glisser d’un moniteur à l’autre, d’un visage à l’autre. Des zones de dialogues se créaient entre les étudiants qui commentaient les réponses de leurs condisciples. Par ailleurs, 7 000 flyers étaient insérés dans des livres de la Bibliothèque. Cette œuvre a été présentée pour la première fois dans le hall de la Bibliothèque Universitaire entre le 6 et le 17 mars 2000. L. M. Laurent Malone chose to present the work in the form of an installation placing 4 monitors side by side. The visitor could sit on a bench and listen to the students’ answers, while allowing his/her gase to drift from one monitor to the next, from one face to the next. Zones of dialog were created between students commenting the answers of their peers. In addition, 7,000 flyers were inserted in the library’s books. This work was presented for the first time in the hall of the University Library between March 6th and March 17th, 2000.
