EL INGENIOSO HIDALGO DON QUIJOTE DE LA MANCHA

Depuis mon atelier entiérement vidé à Amsterdam (Da Costakade 158), une lampe rouge a lu en code morse l’intégralité de El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha de Cervantès. Cette lecture, jour et nuit, a duré environ quarante jours.


From the 31th of december 2005, from one of the windows of the TetteRode on Da Costakade, Amsterdam, has been read in morse with a red lamp, El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha of Cervantès. This continuous reading of the integrality of the book lasted forty days.
It’s a gift to the city which face the window on the fifth floor. It’s a monologous talk facing the world. But I’s also a way to use the empty studio space as an amplifier. The big white cube is only use for his reverberation of the light. The studio becomes a tool for language instead of being the space for work or show. The concequence is that one can not work in this studio, but has to let the studio itself work for him.
On the front of this building full of studios where people works, one studio works on its own.

PIERRE MÉNARD, AUTOR DEL QUIJOTE

Dans El jardín de senderos que se bifurca, Borgès décrit l’œuvre majeure de Pierre Ménard qui consisterait en la reécriture à l’identique de deux chapitres et demi du Quijote de Cervantès.
C’est donc cette version qui a été lu en code morse par une lampe rouge le 2 février 2006 à Agentur à Amsterdam. Borgès considérait la version bien plus courte de Ménard comme beaucoup plus “subtile” puisque réduite à l’essentiel.


For the Incidental Project in Agentur, a red light will read in luminous morse code Pierre Menard’s version of the « Quijote ». Borges wrote in El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan, that the main work of this author was the rewriting of two chapers and an half of the « Quijote ».
This red-light reading is a monologous talk facing the Witte de Whitestratt. But It is also a way to use the empty exhibition space as an amplifier. The white walls are only use for the reverberation of the light, and the big windows open it to the street. The exhibition space becomes a tool for language instead of being the space to show.
Linked to that experience, since the 31th of december 2005, from one of the windows of the TetteRode on Da Costakade, is read in morse code the integrality of El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha of Cervantès. This continuous reading of the all book will last one month and an half.
As Borges says about the version of Pierre Menard, it’s shorter but « more subtile », because it’s a reduction to the essential, the Agentur version is a subtile reduction of the reading going on in Da Costakade.

Post Scriptum : And then, you may ask why the « Quijote » ? And Menard would answer : el « Quijote », aclara Menard, “me interesa profundamente, pero no me parece  ¿cómo lo diré? inevitable.
