The exquisite corpse video project

THE EXQUISITE CORPSE VIDEO PROJECT
Inspired by the Surrealist invention, the "Exquisite Corpse", a method of sequential, collaborative image production, these video shorts were composed over a period of two weeks by 14 artists from 9 countries.
In the Surrealist 'game', a paper is folded such that each contributor sees only a small portion of the previous contributor's work, and begins his own work from that small portion. When the last participant is finished, the sheet is unfolded to reveal a strangely divergent, yet contiguous form or figure.
These video versions were created by members of artreview.com, an online networking site for artists, galleries, and collectors, and was instigated and managed by Brazilian video-artist, Kika Nicolela. They were composed in the following manner: the final ten-seconds of an initial one-minute video is sent online to a second participant, who then integrates it into the beginning of her own minute-long video, and she, in turn, sends her final-ten-seconds to a third contributor, and so on, until the collected minutes are 'stitched' together in their order, creating a single piece.
While the Surrealists are said to have created the method almost a century ago, only recently could such a fast-paced, pan-global, audiovisual variation of this exercise be produced.
Whereas the end product is the medium by which this method can be shared with an audience, it is the inspiring process of sharing and exchange between and among 'strangers' from around the world that illuminates and celebrates the possibilities and potentials of globalized, collective creativity.

L'exposition de Simone Stoll è la Galerie ARTENA se présente véritablement comme un oeuvre musicale dont chacune des peintures serait une note ou un son.
On peut la lire (par exemple) de gauche à droite.
Après un dessin qui donne le la, les peintures jaunes s'alignent avec des tailles variées. On sent dans cet alignement à la fois une logique secrète et beaucoup de liberté. La série est ponctuée audacieusement en son milieu par une grande toile grise qui est comme arrachée à la série de peintures du mur d'en face, établissant ainsi irrésistiblement un va-et-vient entre ces deux murs.
La série des dessins dans la salle d'en bas évoque aussi les trois mouvements d'un oeuvre musicale, depuis les vibrations des deux dessins de gauche, suivies d'une série de lignes verticales qui apportent un élément de calme, et sur le mur de droite des lignes arrachées qui chutent, pour se terminer par un sourd fortissimo.
On remonte les escaliers et l'on trouve la série des grandes toiles ; on passe du jaune au bleu, puis au bleu ténébreux . C'est de cette série qu'est extraite la grande toile grise du mur d'en face qui assure une subtile circulation entre les deux murs. Enfin sur la droite trois dessins superposés terminent l'exposition en évanescence.
Si chacun des dessins ou peintures attire par ses qualités propres, l'ensemble a une unité et une vérité surprenante, comme chez les êtres vivants où le tout ne se réduit pas à l'ensemble des parties.
